The Word … The Law

We aren’t going to spend a lot of time trying to convince anyone “The Word,” refers to the scriptures. Nor “The Word,” can also refer to Yeshua/Jesus. It seems to be a common consensus among most Christians.

However, in regard to it referring to the scriptures, we have to bear in mind, when it is spoken of as such in the New Testament, it is always referring to the Tanakh/Old Testament. More specifically the Torah/First five books of Moses. As the New Testament writers were writing, this was their scriptures, nothing else existed.

The Word … Yeshua/Jesus

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God; this One was in the beginning with God; all things happened through Him, and without Him not even one thing happened that has happened. … The Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of [the] only begotten of [the] Father, full of grace and truth. … And we all received out of His fullness, and grace for grace; for the Law was given through Moses, the grace and the truth came through Jesus Christ

John 1 Literal Standard Version (LSV)

Jesus says to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father, if not through Me; if you had known Me, you would also have known My Father, and from this time you have known Him, and have seen Him. … Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone may love Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and we will make [an] abode with him; and he who is not loving Me does not keep My words; and the word that you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.

John 14 LSV

According as the Father loved Me, I also loved you, remain in My love; if you may keep My commands, you will remain in My love, according as I have kept the commands of My father, and remain in His love; these things I have spoken to you that My joy in you may remain, and your joy may be full. This is My command, that you love one another, according as I loved you; greater love has no one than this, that anyone may lay down his life for his friends; you are My friends if you may do whatever I command you …

John 15 LSV

Before we move on, let’s sum up some of what we have just read.

  • The Law was given through Moses
  • Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ
  • Jesus is the way, the truth and the life
  • If anyone loves Jesus, he will keep “My word”
  • If you keep My commands as I have kept the commands of my father you will remain My love.

‘My word’ = entolē injunction, i.e. an authoritative prescription:—commandment, precept. – Strongs. We also find entolē in Matthew 5:19 where Jesus is talking about the commandments, however, this time it is translated as ‘commands’:

Do not suppose that I came to throw down the Law or the Prophets – I did not come to throw down, but to fulfill; for truly I say to you, until the heaven and the earth may pass away, one iota or one tittle may not pass away from the Law, until all may come to pass. Therefore whoever may loose one of these commands – the least – and may teach men so, he will be called least in the kingdom of the heavens, but whoever may do and may teach [them], he will be called great in the kingdom of the heavens.

Matthew 5 LSV

Let’s back up a bit now, back in John 1, we read that The Word – Jesus was in the beginning. The Word = logos, we see this in Mark 7 as Jesus refers to the Pharisees and the scribes. Watch for it below, logos = commands [of God]:

These people honors Me with the lips, and their heart is far from Me; and in vain they worship Me, teaching teachings, commands of men; for having put away the command of God, you hold the tradition of men, … “Well do you put away the command of God that you may keep your tradition; for Moses said, Honor your father and your mother; … you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or for his mother, setting aside the word of God for you tradition that you delivered; and many such like things you do.”

Mark 7 LSV

So the same word used in John 1 to describe Jesus is the same word used in Mark 7 to describe God’s commandments. And lest we wonder what God’s command’s are, Jesus speaks about one of the famous Ten Commandments.

So now we have Jesus is the Word, the Word is God’s Law. Logos = ‘the word’

… for the wrath of a man does not work the righteousness of God; for this reason, having put aside all filthiness and superabundance of evil, receive the implanted word in meekness, that is able to save your souls; and become doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves …

James 1 LSV

… “My mother and My brothers! They are those who are hearing the word of God, and doing.”

Luke 8:20-21

Having purified your souls in the obedience of the truth through the Spirit to unhypocritical brother love, love one another earnestly out of a pure heart, being begotten again, not out of corruptible seed, but incorruptible, through the word of God – living and remaining – throughout the age; because all flesh [is] grass withered, and the flower of it fell away, but the sayings of the Lord remains – throughout the age; and this is the saying of good news that was proclaimed to you.

1 Peter 1 LSV

In that last verse “through the word of God,” is logos of God. But “sayings of the Lord” is rhēma of the Lord. Rhēma has to do with the uttering by a living voice, something spoken. Peter is actually quoting a verse from Isaiah 40 here. When we go back and look at Isaiah 40 the word used is dabar meaning to declare or speak.

Ready for this?

Yhwh has spoken these words to all your assembly in the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, [and] of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, [with] a great voice; and He has not added; and He writes them on two tablets of stone and give them to me. … And you have observed to do as your God Yhwh has commanded you, you do not turn aside [to] the right or left; in all the way which your God Yhwh has commanded you – walk, so that you live, and [it is] well with you, and you have prolonged days in the land which you possess.”

Deuteronomy 5 LSV

Dabar = “spoken these words” This verse is right after the reading of the Ten Commandments.

Seeing the circle now?

Let’s review shall we?

  • The Law (also translated as Word and Commands) was given through Moses
  • Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ
  • Jesus is the way, the truth and the life
  • If anyone loves Jesus, he will keep “My word”
  • If you keep My commands as I have kept the commands of my father you will remain My love.
  • If anyone may love Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him
  • Jesus didn’t come to throw down the Law but fulfill it
  • Jesus is the Word, the Word is God’s Law
  • Whoever teaches and does the Law will be great in the Kingdom of Heaven
  • One is in vain worship if he puts away the commandments of God and teaches man’s traditions
  • The implanted Word saves your soul
  • Jesus’s mothers and brothers are those who hear and do the word of God
  • Having purified your souls in the obedience of the truth through the Spirit being begotten again through the incorruptible word of God
  • The sayings of the Lord is the saying of good news that was proclaimed to you
  • He writes them on two tablets of stone
  • In all the way which your God Yhwh has commanded you – walk, so that you live, and [it is] well with you, and you have prolonged days in the land which you possess

Jesus didn’t just come to be the final Lamb sacrificed for atonement, He came to show us how to live.

Jesus is the way … the only way to God through his cleansing blood shed on the cross as the final Lamb of atonement to take away our sins.

Jesus is the truth … He came and spoke the truth about how God’s commands and Law had been replaced by man’s traditions.

Jesus is the life … He showed us how to live, how to truly love God, and how to walk out a life of obedience to God’s commands.

Is He REALLY your way, truth, and life? Or is He your get out of Hell free card?

You want to have a true relationship with Him? He said, you are His friend if you do whatever He commands you. If you will keep His word then His Father will love you.

If you don’t keep His commandments, there isn’t any relationship. And whoever may loose one of these commands and may teach men so, he will be called least in the kingdom of the heavens.

Ponder that for a bit.
