Speak Truth … The Rejected (Doctrine of a Disciple)

Jesus goes back to Nazareth, to a synagogue He was very familiar with. Scripture says He was brought up here, so I would guess, they were familiar with Him as well. He stood up and read a scroll, then sat down and said the following:

“Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4 NIV)

The people at that time would have understood exactly what He was saying. They would have understood He was making a Messianic claim. How did they respond?

22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth.

Keep a hold of those words for a moment, we’ll bring them back in just a bit. Jesus then says,

23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’”24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers[a] in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”

What it seems I hear Jesus saying is, we won’t always be accepted by those we know best, the ones we’ve grown up with. It also hints to a reason not everyone is provided for or healed. Acceptance … maybe those people who were not provided for or healed would not have accepted the gift giver which in turn rejects the gift to be given?

The flip side is, we won’t always accept those who have grown up around us. This is something we could correct and should be on the look out for within ourselves. Are we quick to judge, quick to dismiss someone we know but just as quickly accept someone we do not? Check yourself.

Take a look at what happened next:

28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, he went away.

HA! They just proved His point so well, didn’t they? You know what got me most about this? Remember the verse I told you to hold on to? This one:

22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth.

Really? REALLY? So let me see if I can get this straight, first, they spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words He was saying. They even understood He was making a Messianic claim and STILL spoke well of Him. And now they are ready to throw Him down a cliff!!! Please note, this was at a synagogue, which means, when it says ‘all’ it would include any religious leaders present as well. In today’s world, this would include the Pastors, Elders, church leaders, etc.

Why? How did they change their view so quickly? Was it because He spoke truth to them and they didn’t like it?

Funny, well maybe not to everyone but to me, it almost sounds like people today. One minute someone or something is great, the next they or it is terrible. Hypocrisy is rampant.

And what did Jesus do with all this chaos, He walked away, Hasta la vista, baby!

So to sum up what we saw from this passage:

  • Today’s praise could turn in to tomorrows judgement.
  • Just because we are rejected by those closest to us, doesn’t mean we aren’t called to minister. On the other side, be careful how quickly we are to reject one of our own, it may cost us a miracle.
  • We may not be called to minister in our own backyard.
  • Say what needs to be said, speak the truth, and walk away.

Drop the mic …
