For the last few years, my journey has been one of freedom. And in many ways, it will continue to be about freedom. But over the past week, I’ve been given a new path in that journey, it’s a path of renewing. So through out the year, expect to see a thing or two on this subject. But for tonight, I’m just going to take a look at just what the basic word, ‘renew’ means. Care to join me?
Renew. It’s kind of a funny word don’t you think? How can you RE-new something? Isn’t it either new or old? The truth is, the answer is “Yes.” When something is renewed, it is both new and old. Which means, it’s not starting from scratch. It’s taking something that was, and is, and making it to be. Ha! How do you like that?
Look at the modern definitions according to Merriam-Webster:
1: to make like new : restore to freshness, vigor, or perfection <as we renew our strength in sleep>
2: to make new spiritually : regenerate
a : to restore to existence : revive
b : to make extensive changes in : rebuild
4: to do again : repeat
5: to begin again : resume
6: replace, replenish <renew water in a tank>
a : to grant or obtain an extension of or on <renew a license>
b : to grant or obtain an extension on the loan of <renew a library book>
See it? Taking what was and is, and making it to be.
I think it makes perfect sense for the journey of freedom to intersect with a path of renewing. Freedom is like the operation, and renewing is like the healing process. Got to dig out all the old, nasty stuff, in order for the healing to begin. Freedom is the breaking out of prison. Renewing is the learning to live again outside the prison.
We can be free people, and yet remain in bondage. Think about it. Just because the jailer opens up the door and says you are free, doesn’t mean you are free. You have to step outside the cell and begin to live before you are truly free. I think some of us are free, but still setting in the cell, waiting for something to happen. Wondering, why am I still here? Why hasn’t anything changed? And it’s only because we haven’t taken the step toward renewing our life. Learning to live outside the cell we’ve become accustom too.
So every now and then, I’ll let you in on some of my journey if you care to join me. It’s time to step out of the cell that I have been made free from! It’s time to renew somethings. Yes, I am Free2Live – Renewed!
For those of use who call ourselves Christians, scripture I’m meditating on at the moment is found in Colossians 3.
Freedom (opening the prison door):
- v 5: Put to death
- v 7: once walked
- v 8: put them all away
- v 9: put off the old self
Renew (learning to live life outside the prison)
- v 10: put on the new self
- v 10: being renewed in knowledge
- v 12: Put on
- v 14: put on
- v 16: Let the word of Christ dwell
- v 17: do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
See how we could do all the steps for Freedom, but never take the steps for Renewing? We can call ourselves free, but if we don’t keep on going, are we truly free? Christ didn’t just die to save us, he died to set us free! Christ said so himself:
9 I am the Door; anyone who enters through Me will be saved [and will live forever], and will go in and out [freely], and find pasture (spiritual security). 10 The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance[to the full, till it overflows]. John 10
Will be saved AND – AND. Sometimes we just stop there. We put a period there. Saved. But He didn’t stop there. He said AND … and will go in and out and find pasture. What does that mean? He tells us, it means to have and enjoy life and have it in abundance. But if we just put a period after saved – we just get the period. End of story.
I’m ready to learn to live life outside the prison. I’m ready to be renewed.
*walks through the door and out to the pasture*
